The Secret Lagoon is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland!
The Secret Lagoon at Hverahólmi, the geothermal area near Flúðir, was made in 1891 and is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland.
Through the ages it has been a tradition to take a bath in the warm water from the hot springs in the area. This was also the site of the legislative body of the community until 1894.
In the year 1909 the first swimming lessons took place in the pool and every year after that until 1947, when the new pool in Flúðir was opened.
The Secret Lagon then fell into oblivion but has now been reopened after renovation.
